Fertility care in the U.S. is heavily concentrated in urban hubs, creating a massive barrier for patients in rural communities. It is estimated that the nation’s 457 IVF labs are located in 250 US counties, roughly 8% of all counties and county-equivalents. Millions are left with limited options, forcing many to travel hours for fertility appointments—often multiple times a month. These burdens not only add financial strain but also create logistical challenges that delay care and increase patient dropout rates.

54% of rural counties offer no hospital-based obstetric services

For patients pursuing assisted reproductive technology (ART), the added stress of travel, time off work, and financial strain can discourage them from continuing treatment—significantly lowering their chances of success.

New Scanning Technology Scales Telehealth to Underserved

While telehealth has transformed many medical fields in recent years, fertility care has struggled to keep pace due to the hands-on nature of treatment. However, emerging innovations are poised to close that gap and expand access to millions in underserved areas.

Samsung’s SonoSync platform is redefining remote care by allowing reproductive endocrinologists to participate in ultrasound exams from miles away. Using SonoSync, specialists can:

  • Guide sonographers in real time during ultrasounds

  • Review imaging data instantly and provide immediate feedback

  • Conduct remote consultations with patients, eliminating the need for repeated travel

This technology allows patients to stay closer to home while still receiving expert-level fertility care, significantly reducing the burden of travel while maintaining treatment quality.

Dallas’s HHM Health, Dr. Kevin Magee scale care, open new markets

In one case, HHM Health in Dallas successfully diagnosed a 32-year-old pregnant patient with fetal spina bifida during a remote SonoSync consultation. This early detection enabled timely intervention, improving outcomes for both mother and baby—a testament to how remote ultrasound capabilities can deliver life-changing results.

Telehealth platforms are transforming fertility care by fostering real-time collaboration —even across vast distances.

Dr. Kevin Magee of the Fetal Care Center in Medical City, Dallas, highlighted how the SonoSync technology is improving access for underserved patients:  “We are supporting HHM Health with interpretation of their fetal ultrasound examinations just a few miles away from here, but for these patients, it might as well be across the ocean.”

For clinics in rural areas, SonoSync’s ability to connect experts remotely empowers sonographers to confidently conduct scans with immediate physician input. As one HHM Health sonographer described, knowing a specialist could join the scan in real time gave her the confidence to provide high-quality care, regardless of location.

By embracing remote collaboration tools, fertility clinics can expand access, reduce travel burdens, and improve outcomes for patients who might otherwise struggle to receive timely care.
